It's been a difficult week. We are all still trying to process Pittsburgh.

But the community coming together, and the outpouring support from our neighbors and the broader community, is very comforting and meaningful. 

As Jews we know that we need to channel the pain and grief into an impetus for action. 

I'm now in New York, joining my 5,000+ colleagues from around the world for the International Chabad Leadership Conference. It's an incredible gathering of dedicated leaders being called on to console and uplift the Jewish world in these trying times. 

Let's dedicate ourselves to #showuponshabbat in solidarity with our brothers and sisters. Be sure to participate in a Shabbat celebration, this week, next week and every week. 

Services at the Jewish Center is 10:00am every Saturday morning.

‘Daughter’ to Pittsburgh Victims Shares Her Memories and Pain 

Bernice and Sylvan Simon were the parents I never had. When I first met them in 2007, I was a divorced single mom, raising my son on my own. I was working as a geriatric social worker at a senior center here in Pittsburgh, and they were volunteers. We connected simply as Jews, but it became so much more. At a time when I didn’t have anybody, Bernice and Syl stepped in for me when I needed them most and comforted me. Every time I introduced them to someone I would call them “my parents.” Because to me, they became just that.

I lost Bernice and Sylvan on Shabbat. They were at Tree of Life, as they were every week, and had come early, as they did every week. It’s hard to think during this time; and it’s hard to mention their names without tears coming to my eyes. They were the sweetest, kindest people who would do anything for anyone, as they had for me. The only thing that comforts me is knowing that they were together when they returned to their Maker.

From the moment I heard something was happening, I knew they were at Tree of Life. I just knew it. All I could think was “What about Baila and Syl!?!” I was shaking.

Pittsburgh massacre adds sobering note to joyous annual convention

Thousands of Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis will be busily studying, praying and schmoozing in New York City this week at the International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries, the world’s largest rabbinic gathering. The nearly weeklong event, which begins Oct. 31, brings together thousands of emissaries from 100 countries, hailing from as far away as Laos and Angola, Ghana and Uzbekistan, for an annual event aimed at strengthening Jewish awareness and practice around the world.

The start of this year’s conference comes just days after the anti-Semitic shooting in Pittsburgh that left 11 dead, believed to be the deadliest attack on Jews in America and an event that shook the global Jewish community to its core.

“It’s been a difficult and long past few days, from counseling congregants to finding the right words to represent the Jewish community on local TV, and then there were my own thoughts and feelings I had to cope with, my family’s and finding answers to my children’s questions,” says Rabbi Yisroel Bernath, who co-directs the Rohr Chabad of NDG and Loyola Campuses in Montreal with his wife, Sara. “I’m hoping I’ll be able to recharge and then get back to work, bringing inspiration and encouragement to the Jews in my community along with a message of action, to act more Jewishly—that’s the Chabadanswer to hate.”

The images CANNOT come from your inkjet printer at home but must be Xeroxed or Laser printed. You can bring your Black/White or Color images to any Fed Ex or Office Depot for Xerox or Laser copies onto paper.

The Influence On Boys in Today's Society

Twenty years ago as a new Big Brother and as President of the Santa Fe Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization, Paul became interested in what was happening to boys, the so called “boy crisis.” In addition to his experience with his little brother, Jacob, and editing the Santa Fe Boys Newsletter, he pursued this subject in research for his PhD in psychology and started the Santa Fe Boys Educational Foundation and the Boys at Risk series of conferences and publications.

Tonight, he will talk about the work of his Santa Fe Boys Educational Foundation, which has focused on a series of conferences and publications on the subject of “boys at risk.” He will describe how he became interested in this topic and what the term means. Paul will also talk about the foundation’s May 2019 conference at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on the “Early Origins of Male Violence.” 

Before Santa Fe, Paul was an economist with the International Trade Commission and with the US Agency for International Development. He studied at Brown University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He lived and worked in Nigeria, Costa Rica, and India and along the way learned enough Hindi to co-translate a collection of short stories about the sacred city of Varanasi, published as Tales of Banaras: The Flowing Ganges (1997).
